A modern drop-in replacement for the Atari POKEY chip (C012294). No need to hunt for increasingly rare and expensive originals!

JUST_POKEY is a fully functional replacement for the original POKEY chip, one of the most important chips in the Atari 8-bit architecture. The original POKEY handles sound generation, keyboard scanning, serial I/O (SIO), timers and interrupt handling. Built on FPGA technology, JUST_POKEY faithfully reproduces the original chip's behaviour in real-world use. Simply remove your failed or missing POKEY and drop JUST_POKEY into the same DIP-40 socket - no soldering required, no motherboard modifications.

JUST_POKEY is a modern replacement, not a transistor-level clone of the original. Due to fundamental differences between contemporary CMOS/FPGA technology and the legacy NMOS process used in the original chip, a 100% electrically identical replica is not feasible. The vast majority of software runs correctly — minor differences may occur in programs that rely on undocumented analog quirks or precise electrical characteristics of the original NMOS die. The goal is faithful functional compatibility, not electrical identity. If your original POKEY has failed or is unavailable, JUST_POKEY is designed to get your Atari back up and running.
