AY 3-8912 sound chip FPGA replacement with few extra features.

AY FPGA PCB layout

The device can recognise the machine it is installed in and apply appropriate settings.

AMSTRAD

  • Original audio output (3 channels).
  • With this implementation, keyboard and joystick are still operational.
  • Additional crystal clear sound output with stereo ABC (Amstrad standard).
  • Direct drop-in replacement, no soldering needed. Remove old chip and install this one.

Optionally you can improve sound quality by doing following changes:

  • Desolder / cut out 4 resistors next to audio jack (in Amstrad CPC6128 they are R117, R118, R119 and R120).
  • Connect 2 wires AL/AR from AY_FPGA to Amstrad motherboard according to the below diagram.
  • You can also create and extra output installing secondary 3.5mm jack or two RCA connectors and connecting AL, AR and GND accordingly.

ZX SPECTRUM

  • When installed in ZX Spectrum, the chip implements 2 x AY inside, e.g. Turbosound.
  • Plug and play (remove old AY, insert device in the socket).
  • Original audio output (3 channels).
  • Stereo output with ACB mixing can be added by installing 3.5mm jack or two RCA connectors and connecting AL, AR and GND accordingly.
  • Additional pad to solder beeper from ULA to get ULA sound (JP1) mixed at additional stereo output. ULA sound is not mixed to original 3 channel output.
